46X-treme Service FAQs

46X-treme Service FAQs

At what temperature will my 46X-treme freeze up?

Jiffy® designed a high-pressure fuel delivery system exclusively for cold weather applications. The factory testing facility tests all drills down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit. Per the National Institute of Standards and Technology, propane will remain in a usable state down to -44 degrees Fahrenheit but it is recommended to keep the propane tank as warm as possible for best performance and ease of starting.

Can the blades on a Jiffy® Ice Drill be re-sharpened?

Yes, Jiffy® Power Ice Drill blades (cutting teeth) can be re-sharpened, but must be taken to a service dealer that does blade sharpening to maintain the precise factory angles. It's wise to keep a properly sharpened or new spare blade on hand. It’s also important to maintain the angles that were ground at the factory.  Never try to re-sharpen hand ice drill blades. Once these hand blades start dulling, you must purchase a new set.

How do I maintain my 46X-treme?

The characteristics of a propane engine are very similar to a 4-Stroke gasoline engine. Oil must be maintained in the engine's crankcase. It has a carburetor, a spark plug, and a fuel source. All of these must be serviced periodically. For more information, see your owner's manual.

How often should the engine oil be changed in the 46X-treme?

Change the engine oil a minimum of once every season. The oil will not appear dirty because propane burns clean. Propane will give the engine oil a milky look as it ages. This is just because of normal moisture buildup from the propane. Change the oil as often as needed to remove excess moisture in the oil.

How should I transport and store the 46X-treme?

Remove the propane tank and run the engine until residual gas has been used.  The valving in the fuel system will retain a small amount of gas and the drill could be accidentally started.  Running the engine once the propane tank has been disconnected will prevent an accidental start. There are 3 preferred ways you can store and transport the unit:

  1. With the powerhead in the drilling position
  2. With the spark plug or throttle handle aimed up
  3. With the powerhead laid down on both handle halves with the carburetor facing up

This will prevent oil from migrating from the crankcase through the crank case breather hose into the carburetor.  Should this accidentally occur, see the question below: “Where is the oil leaking from on my 46X-treme?”  To prevent damage or contamination, reinstall the vinyl cap that comes on the propane regulator fitting which attaches to the propane tank.

What do I do if the switch on my 46X-treme won't stay in the off position?

Jiffy® uses a positive on switch. This type of switch is used as a "kill" switch. Hold the switch in the off position until the engine has completely stopped. CAUTION: To prevent accidental starts, disconnect the propane tank.

What grease is used in the transmission of the 46X-treme?

Jiffy® uses synthetic cold weather, all-purpose grease with PTFE. If you are replacing the grease in the transmission, you should lightly coat the teeth with the grease. If you pack the transmission full of grease, this will cause damage to the transmission.

What is the first thing to do when you purchase 46X-treme?

Take the owner’s manual out of the packaging and read the manual.  Then remove the powerhead and drill assembly from the box and assemble the drill assembly to the powerhead. Once that is completed, make sure that you fill the engine with the proper amount of oil before starting the powerhead. After you have the powerhead filled up with the correct amount of oil, proceed to screw the propane tank to the regulator and follow the starting procedure.

What is the procedure for checking engine oil of the 46X-treme?

The 46X-treme all have a filler neck located next to the muffler. To check the oil level on the 46X-treme, place the powerhead in the drilling position. Then, remove the fill plug with dipstick and wipe the dipstick clean. Finally, put the plug cap with the dipstick back into the engine block and thread the plug down tight. Then, remove the cap and check the oil level based on dipstick level until the oil level is where it is supposed to be.

What is the procedure for filling the 46X-treme with engine oil?

First, make sure residual oil from the factory testing has been removed by removing the oil fill plug, holding the unit over a drain pan and turning the unit so that this opening is on the bottom. Once drained, fill with ONLY 6 ounces of approved fully synthetic 0W40 oil, Jiffy® Part #4288. Check fill level per procedure. Overfilling your engine with oil may cause your engine to smoke, leak, or be damaged as well as void the original warranty.

What is the proper way to start your unit?

The proper way to start your unit is to first check your oil level.  Make sure that you have the proper amount of oil in your unit. Then, check to make sure that all hardware is tight. When starting your unit, you want to make sure that you hold the throttle wide open with your left hand to open the flow of fuel into the engine, then pull the recoil with your right hand while keeping the throttle engaged to start.

What is the warranty on a Jiffy® Power Ice Drill?

Jiffy® has the best warranty and service available in the industry. All Jiffy® Power Ice Drills purchased between 10/1/16 and 8/31/18 have a 5-year warranty period from the date of purchase. If you didn't purchase your Jiffy® Power Ice Drill between 10/1/16 and 8/31/18, you will have a 2-year warranty period from the date of purchase.  If you have a problem with a Tecumseh engine, refer to the nearest Authorized Tecumseh Service Center by calling 1-800-558-5402. For all other repairs take the drill to an Authorized Jiffy Service Dealer.

What spark plug should I use on my 46X-treme and what is the proper gap?

Jiffy® part #4290 is the preferred spark plug for the 46X-treme models.  This is a hot plug for cold weather starting.  Other spark plugs that can be used:  AutoLite #4194, Torch #A5RTC, NGK #CR5HSA or NGK #CR4HSB.  The gap on the spark plug should be .015”.

Where do I take my 46X-treme if warranty work is needed?

Do not return your 46X-treme to the retailer. Call the Jiffy® Customer Service number at 800-345-6007 or take your unit to your nearest Jiffy® service dealer. A listing of Jiffy® authorized service centers can be found at Ardisam.com. Have your Jiffy® Serial Number available when you call.

Where is the oil leaking from on my 46X-treme?

First, check for proper oil level. The 46X-treme engines are similar to a 4-Stroke lawnmower engine, which will leak oil if tipped the wrong direction. There are 3 preferred ways you can store and transport the unit:

  1. With the powerhead in the drilling position
  2. With the spark plug or throttle handle aimed up
  3. With the powerhead laid down on both handle halves with the carburetor facing up

This will prevent oil from migrating from the crankcase through the crankcase breather hose into the carburetor. Should this accidentally occur, check your oil level and make sure you have the proper amount of oil in your engine. Next, run the engine outdoors until the engine does not smoke anymore from the exhaust. This is burning off the excess oil that leaked into the carburetor. You will then want to wipe up any oil that leaked to the outside of the powerhead.

Why do I smell propane coming from the unit when I am not using it?

When not in use, remove the propane tank and run the engine until residual gas has been used. The seal located in the propane tank may lose its dexterity due to age and compression causing a chance of gas leakage.  Attach a new propane tank when you are ready to drill holes. Check the fittings from the propane tank to the carburetor.

Why is my auger turning while no throttle is applied?

Idle is set for cold weather applications. This may exceed the clutch engagement speed if started in a warm environment. Test the unit in cold temperatures before contacting Jiffy® Customer Service at 920-467-6167 for instructions or contact your nearest Jiffy® service dealer. Have your Jiffy® Serial Number available if you do need to call.

Why won’t my 46X-treme start?

Do not return your 46X-treme to the retailer. To start the 46X-treme, hold the throttle wide open to allow the gas to flow thru the carburetor.  Pull the recoil approximately 1 to 3 times, using short pulls like a chain saw. Slowly increase the throttle as the engine warms up until full operating speed has been reached. Then return to idle.  This should take less than a minute. For more information, see your owner's manual.
